What do you do if you’ve sailed before and want to rent one of our boats? Easy! Contact Henly, the Sailing Program Manager (aervin@mwrma.com or 444-2918), and make a reservation for a check ride. For dinghy rentals you will have to pass a written test and then successfully sail the boat through several tacks and jibes, and then dock the boat. For keelboat rentals you will have to pass a written test and then go out on a check-ride with one of our qualified instructors. Check-Ride Requirements: v The Sailing Center needs a copy of your sailing qualifications (examples include US Sailing, ASA, or Naval Sailing Qualifications) for our records v Please bring at least one capable person to crew two would be better. Remember this is a check ride to ensure you are qualified to rent our boat. Please don’t bring the whole family or a group of friends, as it interferes with the check out process. v Take time prior to the check ride to become familiar with the boat. This may be as much as 2-3 hours. You need to know the boat’s systems. The check ride is not designed as a sailing lesson. You will be expected to give a safety briefing and point out the location of all safety gear on the boat. This includes number and location of PFDs, first aid kit, flares, emergency tiller, horn, fire extinguishers, and engine water intake (if applicable). v The check ride costs $20.00 an hour and take anywhere from 2-6 hours depending on conditions and your familiarity with the boat and it’s system. Please set aside adequate time for your check ride.
Typical Ceck-Ride Tasks:
5. Deploy and recover anchor demonstrating effective communication with crew
10. Conduct crew safety brief 11. Establish radio contact with NNSC
